The building that is now home to Donna’s Old Towne Café has stood at the corner of College and Main Streets for nearly two centuries. Its story began in 1830 as Town Lot 32, part of the original Town of Madisonville. Over the years, the property was connected to physicians, educators, business owners, public officials, and early Madisonville printers, making it an important piece of the town’s early history.

By the mid-1800s, the lot had become home to a two-story brick storehouse, anchoring the corner as a place of business in downtown Madisonville. In 1897, a new storehouse was completed on the property and later became home to the Bank of Madisonville in 1918. The bank served the community through the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, and the decades that followed.

After the bank moved in the 1970s, the building continued to serve the community as a drug store, snack bar, and small café. In 1994, Donna Leslie purchased the property, giving the historic building new life as Donna’s Old Towne Café.

In 2017, a fire led to a major renovation of the restaurant, revealing and preserving some of the building’s original character. Today, pieces of its past can still be seen throughout the café. The exposed brick walls, uncovered and sealed after the fire, reveal the strength and age of the original structure. Overhead, the original decorative metal ceiling remains, with floral designs pressed into each square as a beautiful reminder of the building’s long life in downtown Madisonville.

From storehouse to bank to restaurant, Donna’s continues the building’s tradition as a gathering place. Madisonville officially declared August 16 as Donna’s Café Day, honoring the café’s place in the heart of the community. Its walls hold generations of history, hard work, and hometown connection.

Family-owned and operated since October 24, 1994, Donna’s Café has been serving up Southern comfort food and warm hospitality in the heart of historic downtown Madisonville, Tennessee, for over 30 years.
